Mildred Installation New York Hall of Science 2016-2018

“Mildred” 2014, Latex exterior grade paint, on Plywood. On view at the New York Hall of Science 2016-2018.  This was the second location of Mildred after being show at the Wassaic Project in 2014 as part of the summer exhibition “Homeward Found”.  At her new home at the New York Hall of Science, she is an experiment; taking theatrical set pieces out of the theater and into the real world. This illusion is completely created by hand, and served to introduce the trade of scenic art to the hyper-diverse community of queens.

ABOUT SCENIC ARTISTS

Scenic artists, (not to be confused with set designers), paint and/or sculpt a designer’s vision into existence.  It is a trade that can be learned. It requires dedication, not an expensive degree. This is particularly valuable in an era of inflated higher education costs. The New York Hall of Science receives 500,000 visitors a year, many of which are students and educators. The intent is to introduce kids to the existence of this trade as they begin to plan their futures.
